In the Moment

Currently, it was Friday, 2:05 pm.  Anticipating the weekend, the arrival of last moments in the final period came as a sigh of relief.  All that was left was 10 minutes of science class on the first floor. Regarding work from this weekend, I wasn’t in too bad a shape.  I had to finish the paper I was working on and start my science project.  This weekend was going to be fun.  I had plans with my friend Michelle tonight.  Tomorrow I was going to the movies with Molly.  When weeks came to an end, I always tried to make time to just relax and hang with friends.

As the bell rung, I gathered my belongings and put them in my backpack.  I had a lot of notebooks to bring home this weekend.  This of course, meant I had a lot of work.  As a checked one thing with my teacher, I quickly made note of it and threw my backpack on.  I quickly asked the teacher to e-mail me further directions, before exiting the classroom and merging into the 2:15 pm traffic of the hallway.

Approaching my locker, I quickly looked down and checked my cell phone.  One missed call. I would deal with that later. I open my locker and begin searching for the needed notebooks to bring home.  I need Spanish, English and of course science.  In a single instant, Michelle quickly walks by, while still telling me something at the same time.  “I have to run an errand tonight…I will be late picking you up…”    I hear what she says and nod, with a smile on my face. This is the typical Michelle, of which I had known for many years.

The week was done.  Now, I just had to go down the steps and wait at the curb.  As expected, my mom pulled into the school and approached the curb.  She was never late, which avoided any confusion on my part with the schedule.    I hop in the car, giving my mother a hug.  In the typical fashion of our usual after school banter, my mom asked how my day was.  “Excellent Friday.  Plans are on with Michelle tonight,” I explain.  “Nothing has changed?” my mom asks.  “I don’t think so,” I respond, with a sense of unease in my tone. My mother pulls out of the school and heads home.

At 7:00 came, I began to expect Michelle’s arrival.  “You should probably get your shoes on Chris,” my mother suggested.  Michelle would probably want to just roll, not actually coming inside.  I got my shoes on and continued to wait.  After about 15 minutes of waiting, I decide to text Michelle.  My text is followed by no response.  Not having anything else to do, I continue to wait.  Finally at 7:20 pm, Michelle pulls in my driveway.  I head out the door, with a look of confusion on my face.  “I thought you said 7:00??” I question.  “Chris, I told you I had to pick up my brother first,” Michelle explained.  “Hmmmm….you might of said something,” I respond.  With a sullen look on my face, I get in the front seat of her car.
