This was me, in high school: cheerleader on the varsity squad. I was an intense athlete: giving my all at every practice. I happen to be captain of the squad this season. This meant I had to choreograph and plan routines, something that I loved doing. On top of this, I had to deal with the drama of the mix of girls on the squad. I was a fair captain, but I meant business. At this point in my life, I was a very driven individual. School was very important to me, needing to find balance b

One of the best memories from high school!! For my sweet 16th birthday party, I invited a few of my best friends for a fun day at the spa. We all lavished ourselves with massages, manicures and facials. The event was centered in the importance of pampering oneself. Being at this exciting age in my life, I was a very optimistic person. I saw my future as something that I had a grasp on, completely. I had everything planned out, for my near future. I had plans to go to college to get a deg

Gorgeous dress, check. Beautiful up-do, check. Perfect date for the night, check. Being the typical sophomore, my mind was consumed with prom preparations a week prior to the grand event. Finally heading out the door, I grabbed my cute little purse and nothing else was on my mind except the fun I was about to have.

My Life Before Accident

This is where I lay. This is what I did. This was the extent of my livelihood. For two weeks, after my tragic accident; I was in a coma. I simply existed at this point. I was hooked up to a trachea, a feeding tube and IV (for vital fluids). I simply just “laid low” for a couple of weeks, while my brain tried to repair from the major blow to my head. This picture is what makes the severity of the injury real to me and not something that just happened quite a few years ago.

I knew thoughts were with me while I was in the hospital. My locker in school was decorated with posters and pictures, keeping me in everyone’s mind. Words of hope. Words of encouragement. These were signs that I was not in this alone, having the school behind me in my recovery.

Our brains are amazing pieces of equipment, such complex parts of our bodies. As explained in this image, the right and left side of the brain control different parts of the body. Due to a right brain injury, of which I have, I have certain kinds of challenges. My left side of my body, specifically my left arm, is somewhat paralyzed. I am unable to move my hand/fingers in a quick smooth fashion.

Girls all beautiful in their dresses, coming together for a shot to capture the moment. This moment was symbolized by my need of other’s help. I stood in my gown, with the help of my two friends at my sides. I had trouble holding my balance, especially in that prom dress.

Final picture before our night of fun and dance. Having a long night in front of me, I leaned on my date and friends for support. Then, off to a night I would never forget!!

At the end of that school year, I was able to return to school in small increments. In one of my visits, a made my way around the school with the help of a wheelchair. It was too much for me to carry things while walking in a crowded hall. Luckily, friends came to my rescue; pushing me around the school.
