One Step at a Time

A memory from my college days:

Today was Monday, beginning of the week.  I knew I had a busy week of assignments, projects and the ever time-consuming reading. The one thing especially on my mind was this project for my science class.  This project was research based, which meant many hours of reading and making conclusions.  I decided that I needed some help in my mission to get things done.  I had an appointment with a tutor in Academic Support at 2:00.  After the gathering of my notebooks, I remembered to grab the large bag of books I had near my desk.  Being certain that I had grabbed everything I needed, I left my dorm, in a mission for the library.

As I approached the library, the weight of the bag of books closely followed.  With backpack around my shoulder, bag of books in my left hand and railing tightly grasped by my right hand: I slowly went up the stairs.  Entering Jenks, I had yet another staircase to climb to reach Academic Support.  One stair at a time, I made the climb: finally arriving at my destination.  I threw my books on the table and quickly opened my backpack.  I had brought the red folder I needed, but I could not find the blue sheet with the assignment on it?  I had forgotten it.  Unfortunately, this meant I needed to head back to my dorm. Deciding to keep my books on the table, I threw my jacket on and went down the stairs to retrieve the paper.

I quickly exited the library and took a right on the sidewalk.  My dorm room wasn’t that far from here, so it wasn’t a big deal.   My brisk pace brought me to the front door of my dorm in no time .I quickly went in to my dorm room and found the assignment.  As I was exiting my room, I grabbed a water bottle and went down the stairs.  Having my hands full, I made my way to the library.  I soon arrived at the stairs in front of the building. Without any hands to hold the railing, I knew what I had to do.  Ever so cautiously, I lifted my right leg, without any guidance with my hand.  Success!  So I tried it again.  Success.  This newfound balance was very exciting, proving to me that my recovery wasn’t over and consequently getting me up the stairs and back to Academic Support.
